There was a season when my phone and computer had no idea what rest felt like, and neither did I. Meetings bled into calls, calls bled into emails, and I wore the exhaustion like proof that I was serious about my mission. I told myself that I simply didn’t stop; I had to be part of team no-sleep; I had to go hard as I had no intention of going home. I was wrong, and my entire body was what eventually told me so.
The burnout didn’t arrive with a warning. It crept in through missed meals, sleepless nights, and a growing numbness where my passion used to live. I was showing up for everyone except myself, all while running on empty. I had built a life of service, but I suddenly fell apart in the process.
That was the turning point. I realized that leading with grace had to start with leading myself well, and that meant setting boundaries I once thought were indulgent. After a prolonged recovery period, I claimed Wednesdays. No calls, no notifications, no obligation to be available to the world. Just space to breathe, think, and remember who I was outside of my titles.
Immediately, I felt a sense of peace about my decision to choose me. The boundary made me more present, not less. I returned to my world with clearer thinking and steadier energy. My Wednesdays became sacred, not selfish.
I share this because I know I’m not the only leader and entrepreneur who has bought into the lie that success meant you kept going even when your body is speaking a different language. Many of us have mistaken exhaustion for dedication. If you’re leading from an empty tank, hear me: your capacity to inspire others is only as strong as your capacity to sustain yourself. Boundaries are not a retreat from leadership; they are what make leadership last.
What would change if you protected just one day for yourself?
