Erin Gruwell is the teacher behind the Freedom Writers, her students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, who were labeled unteachable and whose writing became The Freedom Writers Diary and the film Freedom Writers. All 150 graduated, and she founded the Freedom Writers Foundation, which trains educators in her methods.
